Speaking Up for people with Learning Disabilities

Speaking Up supports people with learning difficulties to use their voice and take action in their lives so that they can be active members of their local community.

We do this in these 3 ways:

John-H-and-JPW 1. We provide advocacy services for people with learning difficulties. Sometimes this is for people who are in hospital. Sometimes this is for people in the community.

ihear Our advocates listen to what people with learning difficulties want and support them to speak up about what matters to them.

The Cambridgeshire Parliament

cambridgeshireParliament The Cambridgeshire Parliament is a forum for people with learning difficulties. We run it like the Parliament in Westminster. Our MPs all have learning difficulties and they are elected by the people with learning difficulties that they represent.

regularMeetingsThey have regular meetings where the MPs tell professionals what needs to change to make services better for people with learning difficulties.

Next Steps

nextStepsNext Steps supports people with learning difficulties to gain more confidence and learn life skills. It does this through workshops and skills programs on things like travel skills, getting a job and confidence building.

peopleLearningPeople on the Next Steps courses also have one to one coaching to make sure they are learning what is right for them.

Young People Speaking Up

youngPeopleSpeakingUpYoung People Speaking Up supports young people with learning difficulties to feel more confident about speaking up. It has different kinds of projects, that include working with young people in schools, advocacy and self-advocacy.

It also has projects and workshops on getting social skills, learning to be a trainer, and getting your voice heard.
