Our publications and resources embody the work that we do and aim to encourage staff and individuals alike to reach new heights of empowerment.

Many of our publications are written by people with learning difficulties or mental health problems who have direct experience of the issues covered. Others are written by our staff, drawing on their own experience, the latest legislation and Best Practice.

When Someone DiesThis interactive booklet was written by our Booklet Focus Group – a group of people with learning difficulties who are employed by Speaking Up to work on our Publications,Consultancy and Training functions.
It is designed to be used by an individual with or without support and guides them through the stages of the bereavement process. It is written in easy-read with illustrations and contains a pullout chart which the reader can use to show the people around them how they are feeling.

The Big BoxThe Speaking Up ‘BIG BOX’ is a proven, innovative resource packed full of specially designed tools in the form of games and activities. It is a curriculum in a box! Designed to promote self-advocacy to young people in a fun, fresh & colourful way. It gives an entire scheme of work for a year providing a tool kit for empowering young disabled people.
This resource meets ‘Every Child Matters’ outcomes. It has been written to be used flexibly, either for one off pieces of work or as part of a curriculum. It will save hours of preparation and planning, fitting school councils, PHSE and citizenship curriculum’s.
This resource has been developed over 3 years as part of Speaking Up’s ‘Young People Speaking Up’ project that is running in 9 Special Schools & Colleges in Cambridgeshire and has recently been featured in SEN Magazine

How 2... Get Into Work           Useful for: E, Su, So

How 2... Get Into WorkThe Next Steps How 2... Get Into Work tool kit has been written to enable other professionals to deliver the successful Next Steps Into Work course.

The course is split into modules which include thinking about what you like doing, finding out what jobs are out there, application forms and CVs, interviews and top tips to be a great employee.

Contents: A guidance manual for tutors and 5 copies of the accessible booklet that follows the course modules and was written by people with learning difficulties who have completed the course. Further copies of the booklets are available on request.

Big Ballot Box           Useful for: SA

Big Ballot BoxThe Cambridgeshire Parliament Big Ballot Box has been written to enable other groups to set up and maintain their own learning disability Parliament using the successful Speakng Up model.
The Cambridgeshire Parliament is in the process of facilitating the setting up of a National network of Parliaments – the Parliament Voices Network – to enable people with learning difficulties across the country to raise their voices and campaign on issues which are important to them.

How 2... Travel in Your Local Area           Useful for: E, Su, So

How 2... Travel in Your Local Area

The Next Steps How 2... Travel in Your Local Area tool kit has been written to enable other professionals to deliver the Road Safety / Local Travel module of the successful Next Steps Travel Training course.
All of the people who attended the course in 2007 say that they feel much more confident with road safety, finding their way around and travelling independently.
Contents: A guidance manual for tutors and 5 copies of the accessible booklet that follows the course modules and was written by people with learning difficulties who have completed the course. Further copies of the booklets are available on request.

Epilepsy and Me           Useful for: Ed, So, Su, F, SA

Epilepsy and MeThis DVD shows interviews of people with learning difficulties talking frankly about their experiences of living with epilepsy.
It is designed for use when training medical staff and carers but provides a valuable insight into epilepsy for anyone working with people with learning difficulties.

Making decisions: the Independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA) Service

This booklet was commissioned by the Department of Health and written by our head of IMCA service following our IMCA pilot project in 2006-07.
It contains clear information on the role of an Independent Mental Capacity Advocate, the requirements of professionals under the Mental Capacity Act and information on Best Interest decisions.
